A sly and stylish crime novel set in Paris, Night-Scented charts a course from the dizzying luxury of the city's fashion houses to the unseen corners where its homeless use their wits to survive.
An ambitious and acerbic young woman launches Arbaud, an upstart fashion house. An ascetic perfumer joins her, intent on creating a scent that will mark the apogee of his career. The aristocratic head of one of the pillars of the Paris fashion scene searches for a means to shore up her crumbling empire. An enigmatic homeless man wanders the banks of the Seine, utterly destitute but utterly free.
And then the killings begin. A car is driven off a country road by a stolen truck. An elegant businessman is executed backstage at a fashion show. Both were key investors in Arbaud. The world of luxury brands, frivolous handmaid to the pampered and privileged, seems to be flexing its claws.
Night-Scented sees the return of Franck Guerin, the unwilling hero of David Barrie's previous mystery Wasp-Waisted. A noxious cocktail of jealous rivalry and unbridled ambition awaits him, with too many suspects and too little proof. Life is not getting any easier. Or death, for that matter.
NightScented eBook David Barrie
Paris is the backdrop for this, the second of David Barrie's very enjoyable police procedural series. Like its predecessor Wasp-Waitsed, Barrie takes us into the fashion world that so defines the City of Light. He possesses a great knowledge of Paris, and certainly knows how to tell a good story. He also is a master of misdirection, laying out clues like breadcrumbs to be followed, and then tying the story into a lovely gift wrapped ending. Mr. Barrie is also slowing peeling away the layers of protagonist Captain Frank Guerin's back story, in a similar fashion that Donna Leon did with her Commissario Brunnetti, thus allowing us to get a better sense of why we want to root for him. My only slightly negative comment is that for the moment, Guerin is pretty much a lone wolf within his department. I find it hard to believe he does not call for backup prior to doing something that clearly calls for it. I've only read two of the novels, but I've bought all five so that should tell you something.Product details

NightScented eBook David Barrie Reviews
Top-notch plot; "villain" not revealed until near the end of the novel; best of all, the reader FEELS as if he/she is IN Paris every minute, much as in Cara black's novels!
